FTM is based on the jMax project that has been conducted by the IRCAM's Real-Time Systems team coordinated by Francois Dechelle, who contributed some of the essential functionalities to what today is FTM.

Initially and currently FTM is developed by Norbert Schnell and Riccardo Borghesi and Diemo Schwarz of the Real-Time Musical Interaction team at IRCAM with contributions from Remy Müller, Frederic Bevilacqua and Patrice Tisserand.
